How To Use Custom Ingredients

Recipinned allows you to create and manage your own custom ingredients, giving you more control over the accuracy of your recipe’s nutritional analysis. While we pull extensive ingredient data from the USDA, some ingredients may be missing from our database. This feature lets you add those missing ingredients and customize their nutritional values to match your specific needs. Once added, you can edit or delete your custom ingredients at any time, ensuring your recipes reflect the most accurate information available.

Editing a Custom Ingredient

After creating a custom ingredient, you can edit its details to refine its nutritional values or add helpful information like aliases.

Understanding Measurement Types

Each ingredient can be measured in three ways:

  • 1 Cup – For volumetric measurements (e.g., liquids, chopped ingredients).
  • 100 Grams – The default weight-based measurement.
  • Per Item – Used when an ingredient is best measured as a whole item (e.g., “1 egg,” “1 apple”).

Using the “Calculate” Button for Conversions

For best accuracy, it’s recommended to first enter nutritional values for 100 grams.

  • After entering the 100g values, click “Calculate” to convert these values into 1 cup or Per Item.
  • The app will prompt you to enter how many grams are in one cup or one item.
  • If no values are entered, conversions will not be applied.

Adding Ingredient Aliases

Some ingredients have multiple names (e.g., “Chickpeas” vs. “Garbanzo Beans”). You can add alternative names in the Aliases field.

  • Aliases improve ingredient matching when performing nutritional analysis.
  • Enter multiple names separated by commas (e.g., “Chickpeas, Garbanzo Beans”).
